IMCA Modifieds from all over the Midwest flocked to Dacotah Speedway for the Iron Man 100 on Friday, May 31st. Drivers would have to outlast and outduel one another for the $5,000 prize. After several weeks of wet, rainy weather, it was finally a beautiful day for some big money racing at Dacotah Speedway.

HOBBY STOCK RECAP

A racing veteran, Chad Hausauer, and a rookie, Brody Michaelsohn, led the field to the green flag in the Hobby Stock feature. It was a three-car battle for the lead between Hausauer, Michaelohn and Kelly Hoerner. Unfortunately, cautions came early and often but the battle for the lead was intense from the get-go between Hausauer, Hoerner, Jeremy Engelhardt and Bill Hultberg. They often raced four wide before a caution would regroup the field. On the final restart of the race, Hausauer and Hoerner raced side by side for the lead. Using the low line around the guardrail, Hoerner passed Hausauer with nine laps to go. Hausauer got too high off corner two, allowing Engelhardt and Hultberg to make it a three-car battle for second. As the laps wound down, Hoerner continued to pull away from the field.

When the checkered flag waved, Hoerner crossed the finish line first. Bill Hultberg made a last-lap pass to finish second ahead of Jeremy Engelhardt. Hausauer, who led much of the race, would settle for fourth while Joseph Feist had a career-best finish of fifth.

IMCA STOCK CAR RECAP

Hunter Domagala started on the pole for the 40-lap IMCA Stock Car feature. Domagala, who won on the Season Opener back on May 10th, quickly pulled away from the field. Shawn Strand, who started third, quickly moved into the second position. Strand meticulously and patiently reeled in Domagala. With 15 laps to go, Strand caught Domagala and they raced side by side for the lead. Domagala would hang on but Strand would rally back to challenge for the win. They raced side by side for the win when a caution with seven laps to go erased Strand’s momentum.

On the restart, Domagala held off Strand to win in dominating fashion. Jason Berg finished third while Jeremy Herr made a late race pass to finish fourth ahead of Matt Dosch

IMCA MODIFIED RECAP

Outside pole sitter, Brady Bjella quickly took the lead from pole sitter, Marlyn Seidler in the 100 lap, IMCA Modified Iron Man feature. Bjella wasted no time distancing himself from the field when the green flag waved. Within a handful of laps, Bjella was already catching slower traffic and putting cars a lap down. Brandon Beckendorf, who started fifth, slowly made his way to the front picking off cars one at a time. By lap 22, Beckendorf was up to second but over six seconds behind leader Bjella. The mandatory caution for fuel and tear-offs came out at lap 50 which erased Bjella’s large led over the rest of the field. Drivers pitted in front of the grandstands allowing for fans a close-up opportunity of drivers and pit crews working on their race cars.

When the five minute timer expired, drivers hopped back in their race cars for 50 more laps of racing action. When the green flag waved once more, Beckendorf grabbed the lead on the restart, bringing last year’s Iron Man 100 winner, Jeremy Keller, with him. Beckendorf started to pull away and as the checkered flag neared, second-place Keller started to fall into the clutches of Jason Wolla. A caution with six laps to go regrouped the field and on the final restart, Beckendorf pulled away once again.

When the checkered flag waved, Beckendorf crossed the finish line first picking up $5,000 and his 200th IMCA Modified victory. Wolla finished second ahead of Keller. Aaron Turnbull made a late race pass to finish fourth ahead of Strand.
